About the site and it's content
This section of the mainsite on ics-base.net serves mainly server admins or communities that run servers with a game Counter-Strike Source or Day of Defeat Source. What you can find from here is player skins and modifications for your server(s).
CS Source and DoD Source
Counter-Strike Source was released on summer 2004 and Day of Defeat Source on September 2005. Since then both games have been under updating but it has been very quiet for the past 1,5 years for CS Source and about a year for Day of Defeat Source. At the moment when i am writing this, Day of Defeat Source has a beta ongoing which will bring new map and new features for the game itself. I am assuming that CS Source will have similiar update later on and perhaps we will see new maps too. Who knows.First time i saw custom skins on servers was around summer 2005. In that time, i already had a CS Source server up and running. I wanted to put something more into it and noticed these custom skins around servers and different forums. They produced errors and there wasn't that many skins available. I wanted more. Eventually there was a way found that would fix those error floods that those "bad" skins produced into the console. During that time, i started learning how to create skins and compile them. First for my own use but i thought why not share the stuff? So, i set up the skins site to old domain of mine which was left over after certain Vietcong game clan went defunct.
Some of the skins i created myself, some i just ported to server-side compatible. Some of you might have seen those Admin-skins on servers out there which based on the default CS Source models. They have become quite popular over the years. I will not take all the credit from skins, as they are not all done by me - just ported to server-side versions. The reason why i made them under ics folder is purely to avoid duplicate skin names incase some other did skin with same name. There cannot be 2 skins with same name. The other wont be shown or redownloaded if one already exists on players pc so this is why you see "ics skins" out there. Some people have also compiled skins by using ics folder. Beware of false copies which might not work ok. Every skin listed on this site is tested 100% working.
When it comes to Day of Defeat Source, i was asked to create admin-skins for it too. This task was proven more difficult because there was different clothing to all of the classes and i needed to create 6 per side. I couldn't write admin just anywhere so i had to do compromises so that filesize would not grow too big. I know its sometimes pain to download the skins so i wanted to smoothen the time. Most difficult part was to get helmet on for custom skins. I got it working eventually but not as i hoped for. Some people might have noticed that you can shoot helmet off from admin model and it still sticks on but thats just a minor issue, doesn't really affect gameplay at all and i could not fix it so i let them be like they are now. I hope you have enjoyed using the skins. They are here for everyone, not just for selected people.
In 2007, i took my first steps with Hammer, the map editor for Valve Software games. I wanted to learn how to make maps since there were less and less usable maps appearing to the game CS Source. Anyway, i didn't get very far at first try. I tried building something but then i ditched the project. Then i got sick (cancer) but after i got better and was still recovering, i opened the Hammer World Editor again. The map de_varasto took it's first steps. I build it on and off for 6 months and finally got it done at summer 2008. Next project was de_hiekka, a dust style map. I really dislike dust/dust2 since they are _always_ on every frigging server so i wanted to create something with same theme but completely different and original layout. I think i did that just fine. So i continued mapping even after that and i haven't stopped.
I do these things as long as i find them fun myself and usefull for others. While i quitted skins-related stuff, i started maps. Maybe one day i will stop doing those too but that time isn't here yet.
Other stuff
I also host other stuff here for the game CS Source than just skins. There is a Soccer mod and files and ZombieHorde modification files. Both are more or less defunct but the files should still work, atleast untill Valve releases update to CS Source...So this is it. End of ~/css_skins, ~/css_maps, ~/dods_skins, ~/soccer, ~/zh, ~/css_guide and ~/dods_guide directories. All these dirs will be updated for the new layout which is on this site.
